Sue Ulu and
Tiffany Grant both were part of the Neon Genesis Evangelion dub cast when
the series was imported by ADV Films, and were part of the cast reunion
for the Eva movies dub for Manga Entertainment. Both were part of a big
contingent of dub actors at Fanime Con. Ulu chatted about her favorite
recording booth stories, like the time she had to spend nine hours screaming
the lines of Kei in the Dirty Pair Flash dub. "After three hours it was
a blur...Kei was fun, but stressful," said Ulu. How does she get through
those sessions with voice intact? Ulu said that milk and butter can cause
problems for those who use their voices for a living, and she avoids that
food.
Both actors
started their careers in Houston, but Grant stayed in Texas while Ulu relocated
to California. "I'm so glad that i had previous acting experience when
i moved to L.A.," said Ulu, who used that as the start of the answer to
a fan question about how to prepare for a voice acting career. "Acting
training in L.A. is better than in Houston. It's the quality and the expense
of those who are teaching. Those who were teaching in Houston were Houstonians
who had been out of acting a long time ago. People stay fresh on the (west)
coast and you definitely get better training out there."
Ulu clarified
that her comment was about the people who offer 6-8-week training courses
and not about university acting training. Added Grant, "Training is all
valuable, whether it's participating in a community theater or in a recording
booth." Another question that fans like to ask actors is how to get work,
and Grant replied that the secret is t live where the jobs are available.
"You can have all the training in the world, but if you live in Nebraska,
you're not going to get any jobs unless you start your own company." For
voice actors, there are only a few places to get dubbing jobs in English
- New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Toronto, Houston, Austin and Wilmington,
N.C.
